Animals are naturally drawn to yards and gardens. When an animal finds something it likes and knows where to get it, they will come back again and again. Some animals, like deer, may be very beautiful to watch up-close in your yard, but they are very destructive mammals that can cause a lot of damage in flower and vegetable gardens. Chipmunks, also a beautiful little creature, certainly looks harmless enough, but they can be just as destructive.
By erecting a fence around the garden, approximately seven feet high, can help keep deer out. But if you don't want a fence, try some human hair. Deer do not like the smell of humans. They are sensitive to it. So, by sprinkling human hair about the garden, it helps keep the deer from entering. You can get the hair from your local barber, but you will need to replace it every so often since the smell will fade over time. Moth balls spread around the garden also help to keep out the animals. Even a product by Avon has been known to prevent deer from entering. Dousing a product called Skin So Soft on some rags and hanging them around the corners of the garden will keep deer from wanting to enter.
Chipmunks, though adorable, also can create destruction in a yard. Simply keeping the yard well manicured, with no debris or wood piles lying around where they can hide, and keeping the grass mowed around the edges, will aid in keeping them from wanting to tunnel and burrow. Also, laying some hardware cloth around places like sidewalks, gardens, and other structures, where chipmunks might like to get under, will help. And, of course, local hardware stores also carry products to help.
