Organic gardening is the art of growing your fruits, vegetables, flowers, trees, and shrubs without the use of harmful chemicals. Today people want food that is natural and not treated with chemicals that can be harmful to them years from now. Organic gardens have become more and more popular over the last few years.
There are many differences between an organic garden and a conventional garden. With conventional gardening, chemical-based fertilizers and weed killers are used to help the plants grow. Chemical-based pest controls are used for killing harmful insects. A large portion of these chemicals end up in the food that is grown in these gardens, and may not be healthy to consume. With organic gardening, none of these are used. Compost made from leaves, weeds, and even kitchen scraps can be used as fertilizer. Instead of buying weed-killer sprays or granules, buy a pair of gardening gloves and pull your own weeds. The first few times might seem to be too much work, but the more you do it, the easier it will become. For pest control, instead of using smelly sprays from the store, get some insects that work to protect your garden. Ladybugs and preying mantises are great for this job, and there are places that sell these insect predators.
Organic gardening might seem to be a harder way of gardening at first, but once you begin, you will notice how much better your garden grows, looks, and how much better your food tastes.
